Job Description
Job Title: MetallurgistJob Description
The candidate will be responsible for ensuring that lab processes are performed in compliance with the methods, materials, and equipment specifications as detailed in the corporate manuals and customer requirements. This role includes leading the conception, evaluation, and implementation of cost reduction, product improvement, production problem-solving, and process improvement activities.
Responsibilities
- Ensure lab processes comply with corporate manuals and customer requirements.
- Lead cost reduction, product improvement, and production problem-solving activities.
- Responsible for brazing, welding, met lab, alloy verification, EDM, laser weld, and heat treatment processes.
- Perform annual lab calibration and certification, including all Round Robins required.
- Determine the root cause of any metallurgical deviations and provide technical support to resolve issues.
- Report critical process status to the Metallurgical Services Manager.
- Interface daily with manufacturing, maintenance, and facilities personnel.
- Serve as SPA for responsible department audits (internal, customer, NADCAP) and support HT NADCAP audit.
- Understand downstream product quality related to HT, HIP, AV, weld, braze, EDM, and react to observed conditions.
- Write and approve instructions in the met lab, braze, EDM, and welding areas.
- Oversee lab operator training and certifications.
- Work with facilities and external suppliers for equipment updates and repairs.
- Foster continuous improvement utilizing process management.
- Provide technical guidance in metallurgical areas of current or potential plant needs.
- Maintain databases for all metallurgical areas per customer requirements.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering.
- Two years of engineering experience in a casting facility or a minimum of 5 years of metallurgist experience elsewhere.
- Basic lab experience including microscope usage, chemical safety, and fume hood experience.
- Familiarity with characterization equipment: SEM, XRD, XRF, Mass-spec.

- Self-starter with the ability to initiate and follow up on projects.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Experience presenting information to top management.
- Familiarity with major metallurgical/alloy specifications by customer (PWA, RR, GE, etc.).
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Understanding of superalloy structures and defects.
- Experience with superalloy heat treatment, welding, and other thermal processing processes.
- Proficiency in MS Office and statistical analysis.
- Strong analytical abilities.
Work Environment
The position is based in a metal processing plant focusing on the creation of superalloys. The role includes managing 5 direct reports (lab technicians), and responsibilities include training, auditing, hiring, and performance management of all direct reports.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $105000.00/yr.
