Job Description
Responsible for a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Comfortable with emergency situations such as Massive Transfusion Protocols' and Emergency Release', issuing uncrossmatched blood according to laboratory approved procedures
- Inspects/issues compatible blood and blood products for transfusion, and performs visual and temperature check on returned blood; disposes of improperly stored/labeled, punctured, outdated, contaminated or hemolyzed blood according to approved procedures
- Monitors blood and blood product inventory to ensure adequate supply for patient transfusion, orders blood and blood products when indicated; monitors inventory of reagents and other Blood Bank supplies and notifies Blood Bank Supervisor or Leads when supply is low
- Participates in the training and instruction of new MLS' hired in the Blood Bank
- Performs routine and standardized tests as outline in the Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures (ABO/Rh/Antibody Screen, Antibody Identification, Direct Antiglobulin tests, compatibility tests, phenotyping, elution, etc.); completes proper documentation
- Performs special methods as outlined in the Standard Operation Procedure and/or Technical Manual in resolving difficulties or multiple antibodies, ABO discrepancies, Antibodies of Undetermined Specificity, incompatible crossmatch; completes documentation
- Performs transfusion reaction investigation and workups, testing and documenting according to Standard Operating Procedure
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Documented training as defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b)
- Non-degree semester hours in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science will be evaluated as defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b) required
- ASCP eligible required
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology/ medical or clinical laboratory science preferred
- Associate's degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology/ medical or clinical laboratory science and experience as defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b) preferred
- If major is not specified on diploma, transcript required
- If foreign degree, foreign equivalency documents required
- Minimum 2 years Blood Bank experience preferred, if applicable
- New MLS/ CLS/ MLT/ AAS graduates welcome!
